Nah, when you drive a manual, you’re driving. When you “drive” an automatic, you’re just in a car, getting from point A to point B.

And yes a GTR, Mp4-12c and so on are exceptions. We’re talking about regular cars here :)

I'd probably swap them. In an automatic I sometimes feel like I'm just operating the vehicle, doing the inputs necessary to make it function. With a stick I'm doing more, which to me is driving.

But turning the key in an automatic or a manual constitutes an “electrical agency”. That’s why you can get busted for drunk driving, while sitting in a parked - but running - vehicle. Mechanical can be defined as turning the steering wheel or pushing the pedals.

I think of it more the other way. When in a manual vehicle, I am driving the car. When in an automatic vehicle, I am piloting the car. But I also feel this way about any other drive-by-wire systems or just lack of feedback in general. It is not just the transmission, but that is the most obvious one. I consider it piloting because it feels more like you are at the helm of a massive cargo ship and you are just suggesting it do things.

If you think manuals are the way to drive operate a vehicle good for you, but there’s no reason to be condescending and then dismissive about it.

That was not my intent to insinuate any type of perception about anything not explicitly mentioned, other than me driving/operating/piloting/captaining a vehicle.

I think you are projecting that line of thought and reading into what I was saying, which is NOT the case. Hell, this started out as a funny shower thought, but clearly well defined opinions are set in stone for some enthusiasts, and is worth dying on their swords for.

I will agree that it may come off as condescending, but only to people who feel they have been slighted in some way. Most other people (not car people) really couldn’t care either way.

Clearly, we all take this too seriously to let this devolve into this little discourse.
